The following is an excellent video on starting a small business. It is done by two attorneys that started their own businesses. One started because she was downsized and other because she wanted a change.
It also mentions a 60-page report that you can down load and learn more information. The nice thing is the report is offered for free and they are willing to take comments about what you think of the report.

Great vid. We tend to recommend to clients to start the business planning process by developing a personal strategic plan using a software like QuickPlanner Plus. The QPP method helps the business owner or creative entrepreneur to clarify their vision, goals, and objectives while defining their financial and other quantitative metrics.
