When searching for Boston, MA, apartments or rentals elsewhere consider places that may be appropriate for an apartment-based business.

In these difficult economic times many tenants are starting a variety of small businesses in their apartments, according to Katie McCaskey in "Unemployed Get Crafty with Home-Based Spas" at RentedSpaces.com.

A variety of apartment-based businesses might include anything from personal training in a second bedroom to apartments that function as a salon, gym or perhaps even a place to offer masseuse services.

While McCaskey reports that some landlords are ignoring the activity knowing it may be the only way for cash strapped tenants to pay the rent, a budding apartment-based entrepreneur should be aware of potential consequences.

Apartment-based businesses have the potential to violate leases, health and safety codes while some may be illegal resulting in stiff penalties.

Be sure to check the regulations and ordinances where you live in addition to the terms of your lease before beginning a home based business to be sure you do not break rules when setting up your new business.

What experiences have you had with home-based or apartment-based businesses and what have you learned about regulations on these businesses in the place where you live?
