I haven't seen any professional speaker making a lot of money facilitating goal setting seminars. Why is that? If goal setting is so important, why do people feel frustrated and negative. I think part of it has to do with our own experience in achieving goals.
Two Schools Of Thought
People come from one of two schools of thought. The first group says they are goal focused and always pursuing clear, conscious goals. The other group, which I think is the majority, has a negative connotation toward 'goal setting'.
Avoid Three Traps
I think there are three reasons people have a negative view toward goal setting:
- Setting unrealistic goals or time lines.
- Not being clear about the 'cost' of attaining a goal.
- Not being willing to do enough work or pay the price to achieve the goal.
Anyone who has accomplished great things in this world achieved their results at a price! Their achievement was paid for with the currency of dedication and consistency!
Identify the 'results' you want, be prepared to pay the price and then set your goals *after* you are absolutely committed!
Apply The Six Stages Of The Planning Process
Remember, planning is the process of carrying out plans. In a business situation, the purpose of planning should be to establish specific goals, policies, and procedures for your business to prosper.
- Research Concept or Intent Phase
- Design Stage
- Commitment
- Resource Phase
- Action
- Accountability

I totally agree with the 3 traps you have mentioned. Another major trap according to me is not to have an "action plan" for achieving the goals. You did mention about this in "six stages of planning process" though.
